The decision that most affects a technical career in Indian industry is made at seventeen or eighteen, by someone with very little information. You pick an ITI trade. Two years later you discover whether the industry around you actually hires that trade, and by then changing course is expensive.
This article is about making that choice well, and about getting the most out of the certificate once you have it. It looks at which trades recur most in heavy engineering and metals work, what each one actually does inside a plant, which ones travel best if you later leave the sector, and how employers really read an ITI certificate.
It is general career guidance about the Indian training system and the steel industry. It is not a recruitment notice and it is not issued by any company.
What an ITI certificate actually signals to an employer
An Industrial Training Institute certificate says something specific: that you were trained against a defined national syllabus in a named trade and assessed against it. That is why it functions as a hard filter in technical recruitment. A vacancy asking for a fitter will generally not accept a welder, however capable, because the requirement is written against the trade.
Employers reading a certificate look at three things. The trade, which determines eligibility at all. The institute, mainly for whether it is recognised. And increasingly, whether the training was followed by practical experience, through apprenticeship or otherwise, because classroom-only training produces people who have never worked at industrial scale.
That third point is the one candidates underestimate. An ITI certificate plus a completed apprenticeship is a substantially stronger position than an ITI certificate alone.
The trades that recur most in metals and heavy engineering
These are the trades whose skills map most directly onto what a large plant needs. Availability of any particular trade varies by institute, and demand varies by employer, location and year, so verify locally rather than treating this as a ranking.
Fitter. The generalist of mechanical maintenance. Assembling, aligning, dismantling and repairing mechanical equipment, working from drawings, using measuring instruments. Fitters are needed almost everywhere in a plant, which makes this among the most broadly employable trades in Indian industry.
Welder. Joining metal, in a setting where the quality of a weld can matter enormously. Welding is a skill with visible, testable output, which means good welders are identified quickly. It also rewards additional certification in specific processes and positions, and those certifications carry across employers and across countries.
Electrician. Installation, maintenance and fault-finding on electrical systems. Electrical skills are among the most transferable of all, because every industry and every building needs them. This is worth weighing if you are unsure whether you want a lifetime in one sector.
Instrument mechanic. Control instrumentation, sensors, transmitters and measurement systems. Modern process plants run on measurement and control, and instrumentation sits close to that. It tends to be a smaller trade with correspondingly focused demand.
Machinist and turner. Machining components to specification on lathes and machine tools. Relevant in maintenance workshops and fabrication, and foundational to understanding how mechanical components are made and repaired.
Mechanic motor vehicle and diesel mechanic. Large works run substantial internal vehicle and mobile-equipment fleets. These trades also transfer readily into automotive and logistics work.
Electronics mechanic. Increasingly relevant as plants automate, and a natural companion to instrumentation.
Draughtsman, mechanical. Drawing and design support. A smaller intake, more office-based than shop-floor, and worth considering if you prefer technical work away from the hot areas.
How to choose between them
Four questions settle most of this.
What does the industry near you actually employ? Look at what plants, workshops and contractors within travelling distance advertise for. A trade in demand two states away is not much use if you cannot move.
Do you want to stay in one sector? If yes, specialised trades tied to heavy industry are fine. If you might want options, electrician, fitter and welder move most easily between industries and geographies.
What kind of work suits you? Welding is close, hot, precise work. Fitting is physical and mechanical. Instrumentation is fine, careful and increasingly digital. Electrical work is diagnostic. These are genuinely different working lives, not just different subjects.
Which institutes near you actually offer the trade well? A well-equipped workshop and instructors who have worked in industry matter more than the name of the trade. Visit if you can. Ask current students how much time they spend on machines rather than in a classroom.
Getting the most out of the training years
ITI students who end up most employable tend to do the same things.
They treat the practical sessions as the point of the course rather than the interruption to it. They learn to read engineering drawings properly, because a technician who cannot read a drawing is limited forever. They learn measuring instruments — vernier, micrometer, gauges — until using them is automatic, since measurement is where amateur work is exposed. They learn basic safety vocabulary before they need it. And they collect evidence: photographs of work produced, a record of machines operated, any additional certification obtained.
Free study material and question banks for trade subjects are published through government skilling platforms, and they are genuinely useful for both the exams and for interview preparation. There is no need to buy anything from an agent.
After the certificate: the apprenticeship step
The most common mistake is treating the certificate as the finish line. In practice, the sequence that works is training, then apprenticeship, then employment.
Apprenticeship gives you what a certificate cannot: experience of an industrial environment, familiarity with plant safety systems, exposure to equipment at real scale, and a nationally recognised certificate of proficiency at the end. Registration is on the government apprenticeship portals, it is free, and no middleman is required or helpful.
Be clear-eyed about what it does not give you. An apprenticeship is not a permanent job and does not automatically convert into one. Anyone promising guaranteed absorption in exchange for money is defrauding you.
Certification beyond the ITI
Trades differ in how much additional certification helps.
Welding is the clearest case: procedure and position qualifications are recognised, testable and portable, and they open doors including outside India. Electrical work has licensing and competency requirements that vary by state and are worth understanding early. Equipment-specific certifications — for cranes, forklifts and other plant — are commonly required for particular tasks and are usually arranged by employers.
Where a certification is genuinely valuable, it is obtained through a recognised body, not purchased from someone who contacted you on a messaging app.
What the pay conversation actually looks like
Technical trades generally sit above unskilled roles in pay, and skilled maintenance trades with experience sit above entry-level operating roles. Beyond that, generalisation is unhelpful, because pay depends on employer, contract type, location, grade and year.
What you can control is how you evaluate an offer. Ask for the gross, the deductions and the expected in-hand. Ask what is fixed and what depends on shifts or overtime. Ask what the grade is and how progression within it works. Get the answers in writing.
Ranges circulating online, including the tags shown on this page, indicate what is commonly advertised in the sector rather than any official scale. Treat them as background noise and the offer letter as the fact.
Avoiding the scams aimed at ITI holders specifically
Freshly certified candidates are a favourite target, because they are qualified enough to believe an offer is plausible and new enough not to know the process.
The recurring frauds are: a fee to be placed with a company, a charge for a mandatory certification that is invented, a demand for original certificates to be deposited, and an appointment letter issued before any test or interview. All four are disqualifying. Legitimate employers do not charge candidates, do not keep originals, and do not appoint people they have not assessed.

Frequently asked questions
Is a two-year trade better than a one-year trade? Not inherently. What matters is whether the trade is employed by industry near you and whether you were trained on real equipment.
Can I change trade later? You can train again, but it costs time and money. This is why the initial choice deserves proper research rather than following whoever else in your class chose something.
Does a private institute certificate carry the same weight? Recognition is what matters. Confirm the institute affiliation and recognition status before enrolling, not after.
Is an ITI useful if I later want a diploma or degree? Yes; there are lateral routes into diploma programmes in many states, and practical trade experience makes engineering study considerably more meaningful.
Which trade is easiest to get a job in? The honest answer is the one your local industry hires. Ask contractors and plants near you what they struggle to recruit, and you will learn more than from any national list.
