At around eleven at night, after the last passengers have left and the current is switched off, a metro system becomes a construction site. Teams walk into tunnels. Vehicles run on the track. Rails are measured, ground and replaced. Overhead equipment is tensioned. Cables are pulled. And every one of those activities has to be finished, cleared, checked and handed back before the first train runs a few hours later.
This period is called engineering hours, and it is where a large share of the technical work of running a metro actually happens. It is also the least visible part of the industry and one of the least understood by people applying for technical jobs in it.
This article explains how it works. It is general information about metro rail operations and maintenance practice, not a recruitment notice, and it is not issued by any metro corporation.
Why the work has to happen at night
A metro carries passengers on a schedule the city depends on, at intervals measured in minutes. There is no daytime window in which a track can be taken out of use for a few hours.
More fundamentally, most track and traction work cannot be done with trains running or power live. Rail grinding, track geometry correction, sleeper and fastening replacement, overhead line or third rail work, tunnel inspection and cable installation all require the section to be empty and, for electrical work, de-energised.
So the work is compressed into the gap between the last service train and the first, which in a busy system is a small number of hours and is shorter than most people imagine once you subtract the time needed to obtain access safely and hand it back.
The sequence of a night
Understanding the sequence explains why punctuality matters so much in this work.
Confirmation that traffic has cleared. Nothing begins until the operations control centre confirms the last train has passed and the section is clear.
Grant of access. A formal authority is issued for a defined section, for a defined period, to a named person responsible for the work. This is a documented procedure, not a phone call between colleagues.
Isolation and earthing, where electrical work is involved. Traction power is switched off, isolated and, where required, earthed, and this is confirmed and recorded. Nobody works on the assumption that power is off; it is proven and documented.
Protection. Arrangements are put in place so that no train movement can enter the worksite, and so that anyone approaching is warned.
The work itself. This is usually the shortest part of the night, which surprises people. Access, isolation, protection, restoration and testing consume a great deal of the window.
Restoration. Tools and materials removed, the site cleared and inspected, equipment restored to its normal state, earths removed, power restored, and the section formally handed back.
Testing and confirmation. Checks that the section is fit for traffic, and clearance for service.
The absolute constraint is that the first train runs on time. Overrunning is treated extremely seriously in this industry, which is why planning a night realistically matters more than working fast during it.
What actually gets done
Track work. Inspection and measurement of geometry, tightening and replacement of fastenings, rail grinding to correct surface defects, welding, and periodic replacement of components. Track is a wearing system and it is maintained continuously rather than occasionally.
Traction and power. Overhead line or third rail inspection and adjustment, insulator cleaning and replacement, substation work and cable installation.
Signalling and telecommunications. Testing, cable work, equipment replacement and software updates, all of which require the system to be out of service.
Civil and structural. Tunnel inspection, drainage, structural checks on viaducts, and station works that would obstruct passengers during the day.
Cleaning of areas that cannot be accessed while the system is live, including track drainage and tunnel cleaning.
Safety, in the least forgiving environment on the system
Engineering hours combine most of the serious hazards in railway work into one shift, and the safety culture reflects that.
Electrical. Traction systems operate at voltages that are immediately lethal. The rule that you never work on equipment you have not personally confirmed is isolated and earthed is not caution, it is the difference between a normal night and a fatality.
Movement. Even during engineering hours, engineering vehicles and works trains move on the track. Being struck is a persistent risk in railway environments worldwide.
Confined spaces and tunnels. Ventilation, access and emergency egress all require specific planning.
Working at height on overhead equipment and structures.
Fatigue. The most underrated hazard. Human alertness is at its lowest in the small hours, exactly when this work is done, which is why hours are controlled and why turning up unrested is a safety issue rather than a personal choice.
The behaviours that keep people safe are unglamorous and absolute: attend the briefing, know who holds the work authority, never enter a worksite without being accounted for, never assume an isolation, never take a shortcut across track, and stop and ask when anything is unclear. Nobody in this industry is irritated by a worker who stops to confirm.
Who does this work
A mix of employers, which candidates should understand before applying.
Metro corporation technical staff in permanent way, traction, signalling and civil disciplines. Specialist contractors engaged for particular works, renewals or projects. Manufacturer and supplier technicians for specific equipment. And supervisory and engineering staff coordinating and authorising the whole thing.
For a technically qualified candidate, both routes are legitimate. Corporation employment offers structured grades and progression; contractor employment offers varied experience across projects and sometimes faster exposure to significant works. Check the terms carefully with contractor employment, including statutory contributions and payment method.
Living on a night pattern
If you take a role in one of these disciplines, night work is not an occasional feature. Plan for it.
Protect daytime sleep aggressively: a dark room, earplugs or white noise, and a household that knows your schedule. Keep your sleep timing as consistent as the roster allows rather than flipping between day and night on rest days. Eat before rather than heavily during the shift, and be careful with caffeine in the second half of a night. Use light deliberately — bright at work, dim on the journey home.
Take the periodic health checks seriously. Sustained night work has genuine health implications, and the point of surveillance is to catch problems while they are still manageable.
And settle the practicalities before joining: how you will travel home at four in the morning, whether transport is provided, and what the roster pattern actually is. These questions affect your life more than a small difference in pay.

Engineering hours experience is genuinely valuable and portable.
You learn permit-to-work and isolation systems properly, which transfer to any industrial environment. You learn to plan work backwards from a fixed deadline, which is a rarer skill than it sounds. You learn documentation discipline. And you acquire specific railway competencies — track, traction, signalling — that are in demand across an industry that is expanding in many Indian cities and is short of experienced people.
Workers who keep a careful record of the systems they have worked on, the competencies they have been assessed for, and the projects they have been part of, find that record is exactly what a new employer or an internal selection asks for.
Frequently asked questions
Is all metro technical work at night? No. Depot-based rolling stock maintenance runs across shifts, and station systems work can often be done during service hours. Track, traction and much signalling work is night-based.
Is there extra pay for night work? Employers commonly pay a night shift allowance and overtime at prescribed rates. Ask for the structure in writing rather than relying on what you are told verbally.
What qualification do I need? Technical posts generally require an ITI in a relevant trade, or a diploma or degree for engineering roles. Read the specific notification.
Is it dangerous? The hazards are serious and the controls are correspondingly strict. Work done to procedure in a well-run organisation is safe; the danger lies in shortcuts.
Can women work engineering hours? Women work in railway technical disciplines, and provisions concerning night work vary by state and have changed over time. Ask the employer what applies in your case.

What a shift briefing actually covers
New technical staff often treat the pre-work briefing as an administrative delay before the real work starts. It is the opposite: in engineering hours, the briefing is where safety is actually created, and the work is merely what follows.
A proper briefing establishes several things. What is being done, specifically, rather than in general terms. Where the limits of the worksite are, so that nobody drifts beyond the protected section. Who holds the work authority, which is the single most important fact of the night, because that person decides when work starts and when the section can be handed back. What is isolated and what is not, because an adjacent line or an adjacent electrical section may well remain live. Where the access and egress points are, and what the arrangement is in an emergency. And the time by which the site must be cleared.
Two questions are always worth asking, however junior you are. First, what is still live near where I will be working. Second, what do I do if something changes. Nobody has ever been thought less of for asking either, and both have prevented serious incidents.
Attend the briefing even if you have done the same task twenty times, because the thing that changes between nights is exactly what the briefing exists to communicate.
The thing to take away
The metro you use in the morning works because people spent the night proving a section was dead before touching it, and handed it back tested and on time. If you join that side of the industry, the two habits that define a career are planning realistically and never assuming an isolation.
